About the Daly
Popular local fishing spot
The Daly River, commonly referred to by locals as "The Daly" is famed for its large barramundi and is one of the more popular waterways for recreational fishing. It hosts two major fishing competitions annually, the “Barra Classic” and the “Barra Nationals”. It is a tidal river of 320km in length winding itself from the intersecting Katherine and Flora Rivers westwards through to the Timor Sea.
Abit of history
Daly River was discovered and named in 1865 after Sir Dominick Daly, the Governor of South Australia. The region lay untouched by Europeans until 1882 when copper was discovered.
Great weekend getaway
The township of Daly River is 110 km west off the Stuart Highway, turning off at Adelaide River. From Darwin, the whole trip is an easy yet scenic drive making it the perfect location for a weekend getaway for visitors staying in Darwin and locals who enjoy a spot of fishing.
